March 2017: Government triggers Article 50, To launch the withdrawal process in June 2016: THE UK will vote in favour of withdrawing the most important elements of the draft agreement from the European Union: Nov 2018: EU heads of state and government and Theresa May agree to withdraw Former Conservative MP Mark Field allegedly violated the code by taking action against a climate change protester at a dinner in the city black tie. Field, who left Parliament after being suspended as foreign minister, grabbed Janet Barker, a Greenpeace activist, and forced her out of the event. On 6 September 2020, the Financial Times reported that the UK government was considering drafting new laws to circumvent the protocol of the Northern Ireland Withdrawal Agreement. The new law would give ministers the power to determine which state aid should be notified to the EU and to define which products at risk of being transferred from Northern Ireland to Ireland (the withdrawal agreement stipulates that in the absence of a reciprocal agreement, all products are considered vulnerable). The government defended this approach and stated that the legislation was in accordance with protocol and that it had only “clarified” the volumity in the protocol. Ursula von der Leyen warned Johnson not to violate international law and said that the implementation of the withdrawal agreement by Britain was a “precondition for any future partnership”. On 8 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Northern Ireland, Brandon Lewis, told the British Parliament that the government`s internal market bill would “violate international law”.” The 2019 revisions also adapted elements of the political statement that replaced the word “appropriate” with “appropriate” with respect to labour standards. According to Sam Lowe, a trade fellow at the Centre for European Reform, the amendment excludes labour standards from dispute resolution mechanisms. In addition, the Equal Competition Mechanism has been postponed from the legally binding withdrawal agreement to the political declaration, and the line of the political statement that “the United Kingdom will consider taking into account alignment with trade union rules in the relevant areas” has been removed. If the United Kingdom does not request an extension beyond 2020, trade relations will be governed by any agreement or World Trade Organization rules from the beginning of 2021.
The 599 pages of the revocation agreement cover the following main areas: The agreement defines the goods, services and processes associated with them. Any provision of goods or services legally put on the market before leaving the EU may be made available to consumers in the UK or in the EU Member States (Article 40-41). Charles Michel, President of the European Council, welcomed the vote and tweeted that it was an “important step in the process of ratifying Article 50”. He added that “equal conditions of competition remain a must for all future relations.” He recalled the EU`s call for fair competition in exchange for a free trade agreement with zero tariffs and zero quotas. The European Parliament expects the withdrawal treaty to be ratified on 29 January, when the next steps at Westminster go ahead as planned and pave the way for the UK to leave the EU on 31 January. After years of political disagreement and drama, the British Parliament has adopted a comprehensive agreement to withdraw from the EU.
